Jamie Reilly and Veronica McInerney from NUI Galway are conducting a Stem Cell Research Project. The researchers are collecting skin samples, which are then cultured and frozen for long term storage. The skin cells are then transformed into stem cells which they are interested in turning the stem cells into nerve cells. These nerve cells can then be used to investigate the physical appearance and the genetics of cells between individuals with autistic and non-autistic individuals.
The goal of the project is to better understand autism and to test treatments that could alleviate negative aspects of autism and autism like syndromes (this could include hypersensitivity to stimuli like sound and taste, epilepsy, inhibited cognitive and motor skills and increased anxiety to name a few).
