Have Your Say: Assistive Technology and Smart Home supporting Independent Living

The National Disability Authority (NDA) would like to hear from people about how assistive technology and smart home technology can support living independently at home.

About the project
This project is part of the National Housing Strategy for Disabled People 2022–2027. The NDA has been asked by Government to explore how assistive technology and smart home technology can support independent living. The research is looking at:

  • What technologies are currently available
  • How effective they are in supporting independence
  • Barriers to accessing or using them
  • Housing design and universal design considerations
  • Policy, funding and support systems

Why this matters
There is growing potential for technology in the home to support independence, safety, communication and everyday living. However, there is currently no clear, evidence-informed guidance in Ireland on what is available, what works well, or how these technologies should be supported through policy.

The National Disability Authority (NDA) is carrying out a national research project to understand how assistive technology and smart home technology can support people in Ireland to live independently at home. This research will help develop recommendations that will inform Government policy.

What’s involved
This research engagement will take place over summer 2026. It will involve:

  • A once-off online group or individual discussion (max. 60 minutes)
  • Sharing your experiences and views
  • A respectful and inclusive environment

Your input will directly contribute to national guidance and recommendations that will be shared with Government departments. Individual discussions are possible on request.

Who we’d like to hear from
We would like to hear from people with a range of experiences, including:

  • Disabled people
  • Older people
  • People who use assistive technology at home
  • Carers and personal assistants
  • People working in housing, technology or support services

We encourage neurodivergent people to take part, and we are committed to making participation inclusive and accessible. Please let us know what you need to take part comfortably.
