Co-Designing Digital Resources to Support the Wellbeing of Autistic Mothers During the Perinatal Period: Participatory Design Workshops.

Ciara Cahill is a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology student at University College Cork. Ciara is recruiting autistic people who are currently pregnant or who have given birth, and who have used maternity and/or postnatal healthcare services in Ireland and/or the United Kingdom.
This study is part of a wider research project aiming to improve the experiences of autistic mothers during the perinatal period (pregnancy and the first year after birth). As part of her research, they have developed draft resources to support autistic people during pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood and are now looking for feedback on what is useful, what is missing, and what could be improved.
These resources will include guidance for healthcare professionals, communication aids, preparation materials for appointments, and information for mothers themselves. By improving the environment and interaction between healthcare professionals and mothers, the resources aim to support autistic mothers’ mental health and wellbeing.
You are invited to take part in an online co-design workshop (lasting approximately 1.5 hours)
In the workshop, you will:
- Work in a small group with other autistic mothers.
- Be shown a set of draft digital resources that have been developed based on previous research and feedback from autistic mothers and professionals.
- Share your views on the clarity, accessibility, and usefulness of each resource.
- Suggest improvements or highlight things that feel helpful, unhelpful, or missing.
- Be invited to complete a short feedback worksheet summarising your thoughts. The session will be audio recorded to help us accurately capture your feedback.
You can choose to skip questions, take a break, or leave the workshop at any time. Support will be available from the research team during the session, and information on further resources will be provided at the end of the workshop.
