North East Inner City Community Health Needs Assessment

Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI) are conducting a Community Health Needs Assessment (HNA) in partnership with, and funded by, the North East Inner City Initiative.

The aim is to understand the health needs of the North East Inner City (NEIC) community, identify gaps in services, and learn what matters most to people regarding their health. This project is being carried out by a multidisciplinary research team from the School of Population Health, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), and is led by Prof. Breda Smyth.

What is a Health Needs Assessment?
A HNA gathers information, both existing data and new insights from the community, to identify priorities and determine what supports or services are needed for people to live healthy lives.

Community Involvement
This project is being done with and for the community, and NEIC voices are central at every stage.

At this early stage we are currently establishing:

  1. A Steering Committee (including community representatives and local professionals) to guide the project.
  2. A Community Group to advise the research team and ensure the community’s voice remains at the heart of the work.

Their aim is to include a diverse range of community member voices which will include, but are not limited to:

  • long term residents of the NEIC
  • people who have experienced homelessness
  • people affected by addiction and/or in recovery
  • migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees (including Ukrainians)
  • members of the Roma and Traveller communities
  • older adults, young adults, parents and guardians of children
  • members of the LGBTQI+ community
  • people with disabilities

It is acknowledged that individuals may identify with more than one of these groups, which is welcomed.
