English and Irish Autism-Related Language Preferences in Ireland

Please read below information regarding research that you may wish to participate in:

Sadhbh Ní Bhéarra is a final year psychology undergraduate student at University of Galway.  Sadhbh’s research focuses on English and Irish Autism-Related Language Preferences in Ireland.

This is a bilingual study being conducted to capture autism-related language preferences of the Irish population in Irish and English. This is a replication of a study conducted by Connor T. Keating at the University of Birmingham on global autism-related language preferences of English-speaking populations.

Who can take part:

You are being asked to take part to share your autism-related language preferences to gain better insight on what neuro-affirmative language looks like in Ireland. Unfortunately, you cannot take part if you are under 18 years of age, are not a resident of Ireland, are not proficient in English for the monolingual survey, or English and Irish for the bilingual survey.

What does participation involve:

This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Non-identifiable data will be collected about your age, gender, ethnicity, country of birth, residence in Ireland, level of education, relationship with autism, diagnostic status, level of openness with your diagnostic status and level of Irish. You can then choose to do the English and Irish (bilingual) or the English (monolingual) questionnaire.

In the questionnaire. you will be shown different terminology options relating to these contexts:
 – Referring to autism
 – Describing themselves or referring to another autistic person
 – Referring to their, or someone’s diagnosis
 – Describing autism more broadly
 – Discussing the abilities of autistic people
 – Describing people without a diagnosis of autism

You will be asked first to choose what terms you are happy to use, and then you will be asked to choose your favourite term. You will then be invited to give more detailed commentary of your autism-related language preferences, this section is optional.
