Navigating higher education as an autistic student: a letter to my younger self.

Please read the below information regarding research that you may wish to participate in:

Sarah Hughes is a PhD student at Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands (TUS) and is working under the supervision of Dr. Edith Walsh (TUS) and Dr. Helena Lydon (University of Galway). Sarah’s research focuses on promoting social inclusion for autistic students at higher education. 

This study was designed in consultation with a panel of autistic adults who have attended higher education. The research aims to gain insights of current and former autistic students who have attended higher education between the academic years 2014/2015 and 2024/2025 (including graduates and those who did not complete their studies) experience navigating higher education.

Who can take part:

Any autistic individual (with a formal diagnosis or self-identified) who is over the age of 18 and has attended university in Ireland between the academic years 2014/2015 and 2024/2025. To be eligible to participate 2 years must have passed since your first day at university, you do not have to have completed your studies to participate in the study. If you are unsure whether you are eligible to participate, please contact Sarah at A00262015@student.tus.ie 

What does participation involve:
Participation involves writing a letter to your younger self about your undergraduate experience at university which will be submitted online in typed format, letters will be guided by a set of broad prompts and instructions and will be submitted anonymously online. Once you have submitted your letter you will also be asked to fill in some questions relating to background information e.g., when you last attended university, age, gender, field of study etc.
