Research Study

Investigating how masking impacts anxiety and self-identity in Autistic individuals.

Please read the below information regarding research that you may wish to participate in:

Chieh-an Tai is a MSc student in Clinical Psychology in the University of Exeter. Chieh-an is currently conducting a research project under the supervision of Associate Professor Anna Adlam to investigate how masking impacts anxiety and self-identity in autistic individuals.

The study is inviting people (aged 16 years and over) who are diagnosed with autism, or self-identify as autistic, to take part. The study also welcomes autistic people with co-occurring conditions, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The study will involve participating in an online survey for approximately 15 – 30 minutes. The survey will ask about experiences of masking, autistic traits, symptoms of low mood, symptoms of social stress, symptoms of social phobia, social identity, acceptance, and wellbeing. Additionally, there will be an open text box where you can express additional thoughts about your experiences with masking and social stress, and masking (social camouflaging) and sense of identity. No personal identifying information must be entered into the text box.

Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You are under no obligation to take part, and you may stop at any time. If you stop before completing the survey your information will not be saved and you will not have completed the survey. Withdrawal after submitting your survey responses is not possible as your responses will be anonymous and, therefore, will not be identifiable to the researcher to enable removal from the study.
